So, you want to start painting, drawing, or crafting but have zero space to do it? No fear, my friend. Do not let that stop you. Your creative time is possible even when you lack the space. This article will show you simple and easy steps to create art without a studio. Sometimes the first step is the hardest but it will be worth it.

Find some space

This may be hard if you feel like you have none. But trust me, you can find it. You may find a small spot near a window where you can set up a stool and an easel works. Or maybe a spot at the kitchen table is all you can manage. That’s fine! Keep your supplies organized and close by so you can whip them out easily. I recommend making this a dedicated art space if you can. Sometimes our space is a limitation but in art, limits can be catalysts for amazing creations.

Decide which type of creative activity you want to do

Yes, I know like most artists we love all kinds of art. I find myself switching between acrylic, oil, pencils, pastels and gouache all the time. But when you’re trying to create art without a studio pick just one to help to manage your supplies. Plus, it gives you focus for when you have time to get creative.

When your space is super limited this can actually help determine what type of art you do. If you only have personal space like a bed in a shared living situation, then maybe choosing a sketchbook and markers is the best option for you right now.

Gather your supplies

I’m like a kid in a candy store when I go into an art supply store. But we must practice restraint (sometimes), especially when space is at a premium. I recommend buying quality paints and paper since they will help your art withstand the test of time.

Choose the supplies you need to get started. If you’re going with acrylic paints, start with your primary colors, black and white, and maybe burnt sienna. You can literally mix every color you can think of with just these colors! Choose a few brushes and your preferred surface. A tin of watercolors is also a great option for limited space. They are contained nicely and travel well.

Watercolor paper or sketchbooks are always the easiest to store. If you want to try canvas buy smaller ones so they’re easier to store. Get a jar for water and paper towels. Once you start to create you may find you need other supplies. But start small and add as you go.

Get organized

Managing your supplies when you don’t have an art studio can be tricky. But with a few organizing tools you can keep your art supplies neat. A closeable plastic bin or tackle box is a great way to store paints. You can keep your paper and canvases in bins as well. I recommend keeping brushes in jars with the bristles pointing upward. Keep your space tidy so you’re ready to start creating as soon as you sit down. If you don’t have the luxury of keeping your supplies out in a safe space, make sure to put them away so they aren’t damaged.

Frame of Mind

The next step and perhaps the most important is getting into the right frame of mind. You can actually create wherever and whenever. You don’t have to have the perfect space or studio. You don’t have to have every single possible paint and brush available. You don’t have to have exactly what your favorite artist uses either. You can create with what you have right here and now. Just start today. Unleash your creativity and see what happens. The world needs to see your unique view and creations.
